Midwife Afua Hassan is a pioneering Black midwife in Houston, Texas, whose more than three decades of experience and deep community commitment have made her a cornerstone of maternal care. After graduating from Brown University—to which she originally came on a pre-med track—she discovered midwifery and moved to Texas to attend the Houston School of Midwifery under Mercy Inyang. In 2011, she founded The Birthing Place, Houston’s first freestanding birth center owned and run by a Black midwife, offering home births and water births, prenatal and postnatal care, and support in a deeply supportive, community-centered environment. Hassan has overseen more than 1,200 births. Her philosophy centers on empowering parents—“the mother is the captain of the birth, the partner is the co-captain, and she as the midwife is the advisor.” Throughout her career, she has emphasized holistic care, racial equity in birth, and the importance of building community, especially in Houston’s Third Ward, where her birth center has become a gathering place and safe haven. ________________________________________________
