Midwife Blanche La Guma (1927-2023), born Blanche Herman in Athlone, Cape Town, was both a skilled caregiver and a committed anti-Apartheid activist whose life bridged healthcare and political resistance. Trained at St. Monica’s Home—the first nursing school in Cape Town to admit women of color—she entered midwifery out of a sense of duty to support her family, quickly becoming known as one of the most trusted and well-liked midwives in her district. While delivering babies and caring for mothers, she also organized women politically, leading major protests such as the 1957 demonstration of 300 nurses against the racist Nursing Act. Her activism brought harsh consequences, including solitary confinement and eventual exile, yet even abroad she continued her dual calling: advancing her midwifery training, rising to leadership roles in English hospitals, and speaking out boldly against racism and classism. Across decades, in South Africa, England, and later Cuba, Blanche La Guma embodied a rare blend of clinical skill, courage, and uncompromising justice—leaving a legacy as both healer and freedom fighter.
