Midwife Virginia Scott Ford is remembered in community accounts as a dedicated Southern midwife whose work carried forward the traditions of Black maternal care in the early to mid-20th century. Like many Grand Midwives of her era, she learned through apprenticeship and lived experience, mastering the skills of assessing labor, using herbal remedies, and providing steady emotional support long before hospitals were accessible to most Black families. Known for her calm authority and unwavering reliability, she traveled to births at any hour, often navigating unpaved roads or rural paths to reach mothers in need. Families recalled her gentle hands, her soothing voice, and her commitment to staying with new mothers well after delivery to ensure their recovery and the baby’s wellbeing. In a time marked by medical segregation and limited resources, Virginia Scott Ford served as a vital protector and guide, her work helping sustain her community and preserve a lineage of midwifery grounded in care, dignity, and ancestral knowledge.
